Chapter 5

Kate read through the rest of the first journal, which left off in the late 1970s. There were, it seemed, an even dozen ghosts on the property and her grandfather had known – and drawn – them all. It hadn't surprised her to see that the drawing of Oscar Blake was spot on based on what Hannah had told her. Almost too handsome, there was an irreverent, 'dare me' kind of look in his eyes and she definitely felt forewarned.

William Archer, on the other hand, seemed like a cute, boy next door kind of guy, though he held a grudge like nobody's business. Looks could be deceiving though. No one would ever believe he was a murderer, but he was. Granted, it was in retaliation for Oscar killing him but still- Unlike Hannah had done with her killers, William did the deed on the depot land and was now stuck having to look at Oscar's face forever.

Her dreams that night were strange. Weirder than any she could ever remember having, while at the same time bordering on frightening. Two men with pink ribbons and dresses, their voices high pitched, sang and danced in circles around her, trying to grab the ponytail she always wore. They each carried impossibly long knives. In the distance, two other men rolled and fought in the dusty parking lot and all the while, Hannah stood there telling her to run. To save herself.

When she started awake just as the sun rose above the horizon, she decided she'd had enough sleep. She crawled out of bed, slipped into her robe, then went to sit in the padded wicker chair on her narrow balcony outside her room. Both bedrooms overlooking the front yard had one while a wider, single one ran the length of the two in the back of the house.

In the distance, she could see Hampton Bay. There were already boats heading out to the open water, likely to fish. In a couple of hours, even in the chill of the early fall morning, colorful sailboats and other watercraft would start appearing. It was a peaceful way to start her day, to allow the last remnants of her dream to fade away.

She allowed her thoughts to return to yesterday, to the hours she'd spent with Hannah. She smiled remembering how nice it had been and it wasn't long before she was dressed and headed to Stan's Grocery Emporium. When she finally pulled in next to the depot, she had two large boxes of donuts and rolls, two gallons of chocolate milk, and a cooler full of sandwich fixings and sodas for lunch.

It had been close to a year since Grandpa had died and it was unlikely they'd enjoyed any food since then. She intended to see that they got plenty of it. At least until she had to go back home. Funny how, just a few short days ago, it had seemed so important to get everything settled so she could leave. Now, the thought made her sad.
